The department has a scientific school in the direction of “Development and implementation of selection programs in the process of improving dairy breeds of cattle”

Head of scientific school – Ladyka Volodymyr Ivanovych; doctor of agricultural sciences, professor, academician of NAAS of Ukraine.

Scientific research is aimed at the elimination and improvement of competitive domestic breeds of cattle. Under his leadership, was developed a method for assessing the type of brown cattle body structure, included in the list of selection features of cap-casein fractions of milk protein, worked out the concept of improving brown cattle in the region on the principles of population openness with the involvement of the best North American and European gene pool.

V.I. Ladyka is one of the authors of Sumy intra-breed type of Ukrainian black and brown dairy breed and brown dairy breed of cattle. He is a co-author of SSTU ISO 8607 “Artificial insemination of farm animals. The semen of bull-sires cryopreserved. Method of determining the number of aerobic microorganisms”, which was enforced by the order of State Consumer Standard of Ukraine (2008).

He was awarded the order “For Merit” of III degree (decree of the president of Ukraine No. 619/2009 of August 18, 2009), Certificate of administration of education and science of Sumy regional state administration (2009), labor honor mark (Ministry of agrarian policy of Ukraine, 2008, thanks from the Ministry of agrarian policy of Ukraine (2005, 2008), honorary diploma of the Head of Sumy regional state administration (2004).

Currently he is the rector of Sumy national agrarian university, a member of specialized scientific council for the protection of candidate and doctoral theses of the institute of breeding and genetics of NAAS of Ukraine; member of agrarian education, science, informatization and advisory section of the scientific and technical council of the Ministry of agrarian policy; expert – advisor on breeding and keeping agricultural animals and management of animal husbandry; member of the Council of Northeastern scientific center of NAS and MES of Ukraine; a member of scientific and technical council of main department of agro-industrial development; member of the Board of main department of agro-industrial development of Sumy regional state administration.

The department cooperates with the institute of animal breeding and genetics of NAAS, the institute of livestock breeding of NAAS, the institute of agriculture of the North-East of NAAS, technologic institute of milk and meat of NAAS, Kharkiv state zoo-veterinary academy.

The lecturers of the department are executors of SBT “Substantiation of improvement and preservation methodology of brown cattle population in the conditions of the northeastern region of Ukraine” (implementation period 01.2017-12.2019, state registration number: 0117U004253)

The project was aimed at solving the problem of preservation of genetic biodiversity in Ukraine. The goal of the project is to preserve domestic brown breed gene pool as their disappearance will lead to a narrowing of genetic diversity in animal husbandry. Brown cattle is of particular value because its gene pool contains genetic complexes inherent in local, aboriginal breeds, as they are the source of replenishment of genetic variability required for selection purposes.

The unique adaptation qualities of local breeds will play the role of an intermediate hereditary guarantor between the demanding to environmental conditions genetic component of newly created Ukrainian dairy and highly productive imported breeds and the conditions of rigid industrial technologies. Countries with advanced animal husbandry have an understanding of necessity to preserve the gene pool of local not-numerous animal species, which is a kind of “golden fund” for genetic engineering and other promising selection directions.

The logical continuation of the previous topic was the implementation in 2020-2022 of the SBT “Methodology of the formation of micropopulations of livestock with unique productive properties using breeding, genetic and biotechnological methods” (implementation period 01.2020-12.2021, state registration number: 0120U102006) Project manager – Dr. Mr. Sciences, Professor Ladyka Volodymyr Ivanovych

The project is aimed at the formation of unique micropopulations of cattle on the territory of Ukraine. According to him, for the first time in Ukraine, the main methodological principles of forming micropopulations of livestock of local breeds and breeds of dual (combined) direction of productivity with unique productive characteristics were developed and implemented in the practice of dairy farming.

The study of the genome of animals of domestic breeds of cattle will reveal genotypes that provide greater benefit and safety, hypoallergenicity and increased cheese making qualities of the obtained products. The creation of herds, whose milk has the specified characteristics, will contribute to the formation of a special craft niche in the production and processing of milk in the conditions of Ukraine. The production of high-quality hypoallergenic and more “cheesy”milk and products from it, which will meet EU standards, will contribute to increasing the profitability of the dairy industry.

Breeding, genetic and biotechnological methods were used to create livestock micropopulations with unique productive characteristics. To assess the quality and benefits of a niche product (in particular, A2 milk), population studies were conducted on adults and children. The implementation of this project will ensure the further preservation and accumulation of valuable genotypes concentrated in herds of local and combined breeds, formed as a result of a long-term breeding process.

As of January 2023, the scientific activity of the department of technology of production and processing of animal husbandry and cynology is carried out in accordance with the approved topic of research work “Improvement of the training technology for the service dogs and evaluation of breeding and working qualities of various breeds.” Scientific supervisor – Bula Lyudmila Valerianivna (implementation period – 03.2018-06.2023, state registration number – 0119U101601).

Within this topic, five postgraduate students are being trained at the department. Topics of dissertation research:

– Peculiarities of the phenotype signs formation of giant dogs breeds

– Assessment of the dog`s exterior and disease resistance of the Continental  Toy Spaniel breed.

– Training of detector dogs.

The teachers of the department are executors of the farm contract subject, namely the Agreement on cooperation with the All-Ukrainian public organization “Ukrainian Kennel Union” regarding the organization of cynologist  training (Agreement No. 1 dated 04.01.2022, LLC “Triumph-UKU”). In accordance with the agreement, remote training of members of the UKU was organized on training programs for breeders, experts, canine instructors and assistant translators of dog exterior experts.

There are student scientific circles at the department. Diploma works of specialists and masters are performed according to the materials of farms and are of applied character. Teachers guide the training and production practices.

The staff of the department constantly is working on improvement of educational process, forms and methods of its organization, methodical provision of lectures, laboratory and practical classes.

The department makes every effort to maintain a high professional level of teachers. In this direction, all teachers are constantly undergoing training at leading universities and scientific institutions of Ukraine.
