DEPARTMENT OF «ANIMAL GENETICS, BREEDING AND BIOTECHNOLOGY»
Research work:
Research work was carried out on the following topics:
- «Formation of the desired type of cattle of dairy breeds in terms of productivity, conformation type and longevity indicators for the use of modern methods for evaluation animals by phenotype and genotype» (state registration number 0123U100733)
The research aimed at developing and introducing into the breeding practice of the latest methods for evaluation the breeding value of animals of created breeds of dairy cattle in Ukraine by phenotype and genotype according to the traits of milk productivity, conformation and longevity; on the improvement of methodological techniques for determining the criteria for selecting animals of the desired type by the breeding and genetic parameters of the traits of milk production and conformation type at the present stage of selection.
- «Adaptation of innovative technology of pre-incubation processing of eggs using protective biocomposite coatings for poultry of different species» (state registration number 0117U004090).
The department’s research includes the theoretical justification and development of an innovative technology for the pre-incubation processing of poultry eggs using the protective nanocomposite coatings “artificial cuticle” “ARTICLE” created according to the biomimetic principle to increase the hatchability of eggs and preserve young birds.
In the direction of scientific research of the department, 12 dissertations were prepared and defended – 3 doctoral and 9 candidate dissertations.
During the existence of the department, more than 1150 scientific papers have been published based on materials of scientific research works, including 12 brochures, instructions and guidelines, 9 monographs, 5 textbooks, 2 dictionaries, and 12 patents have been received.
Currently, there are four graduate students studying at the postgraduate school.
Scientific services on the topic 1:
– development of selectional-breeding system and organizational measures aimed at consolidating livestock of desired type, thanks to in-depth retrospective analysis of the selection information of retired and existing animal population in the breeding / commercial herd by reproduction the cattle of dairy breeds;
– evaluation of the herd genealogical formations with the development of a rational perspective linear structure with the selection of high-value sires in terms of milk productivity and conformation type, which will guarantee the farm and breed progress based on leading economically useful traits;
– professional evaluation of cows by conformation type for the modern methods use of linear classification in order to determine the development level of conformation body parts characterizing the body structure and udder of cows, identifying deficiencies that negatively affect the performance indicators of animals, their longevity, reproductive capacity, which create problems of their keeping and automated milking;
– the development of breeding measures aimed at the implementation of planned tasks to improve the quantitative and qualitative indicators of the herd, which are based on the theoretical foundations of reproduction, selection and parameters of the desired type, which will guarantee the farm competitiveness;
– implementation of the automated selectional-breeding record keeping system “PLEMOFIS” / “ORSEK” and genetic evaluation of animals with the provision of applied computer programs at the world standards level, which will allow to reliably determine the animals breeding value, control of livestock movement, growth and development of young animals, processes of reproduction, feeding and veterinary care;
– development of a promising breeding program for creation of highly productive herd for breeding dairy cattle and scientific support of the program implementation process, including training of specialists, provision of consultations, fixation of sires and other scientific, methodological and practical assistance.
Main technical and economic indicators:
– implementation of the proposed measures will allow orientation in a number of zootechnical, breeding, technological and organizational-economic issues, the application of which ensures effective cattle breeding and profitable production;
– developments will allow to constantly keep under control the selection, economic and production situation of the herd, to have at hand a number of scientifically based recommendations on issues of genetics, breeding and selection of animals.
Scientific services on the topic 2:
The “artificial cuticle” technology “ARTICLE” was developed at SNAU by the group of Professor O.G. Bordunova, designed to solve the following problems in the modern incubation of farm poultry eggs:
1) providing powerful protection to the hatching eggs of farm poultry in relation to the pathogenic microflora of the environment, the danger of which is constantly increasing, negatively correlating with productivity indicators;
2) the need to completely eliminate from the technology of eggs incubation of farm poultry: a) highly effective, inexpensive, but extremely toxic formaldehyde and b) quaternary ammonium compounds, which, firstly, cause an increase in the resistance level of pathogenic microflora and, secondly, pollute incubation waste with toxic and persistent to chemical destruction by residues, which prevents the processing of shell waste without preliminary laborious cleaning;
3) the urgent need to develop technologies for the protection of hatching eggs of poultry based on the so-called “green” biomimetic techniques that allow using natural or synthetic compounds to create artificial structures that are as similar as possible to natural ones. Synthetic compounds in environmentally friendly “green” technologies can take part as constituent ingredients only if they completely and quickly destructed to form safe products (typical examples of such methods are active oxidative processes, hydrolytic reactions, photo- and dark catalytic processes involving peroxide compounds and nanoparticles).
Main technical and economic indicators:
The “Artificial Cuticle” technology is using for pre-incubation processing of eggs of agricultural poultry in hatcheries and poultry farms of various forms of ownership.
The “Artificial Cuticle” technology is applying to the processing of edible eggs to improve the quality characteristics of eggs and extend their shelf life.
Incubation waste (eggshells) is applicable in the processing industry.
