OPEN LABORATORY CLASS: “ASSESSING THE NUTRITIONAL VALUE AND QUALITY OF SILAGE AND HAYLAGE”

On October 14, 2025, at the Bio-technology Faculty, Anna Shkurat, an Assistant of the Department of Feed Technology and Animal Nutrition, conducted an open laboratory class for first-level students and all interested participants as part of the course “Feeding of Farm Animals” on the topic: “Assessing the Nutritional Value and Quality of Silage and Haylage.”

The purpose of the open class was to provide the students with quality requirements, methods for collecting composite feed samples, and ways to account for silage and haylage stocks.

The session, presented in the form of a presentation, included elements of the course’s teaching and methodological complex, industry standards for green feed quality, normative requirements for silage and haylage classes, as well as photos and video materials.

Participants learned about feed quality requirements, methods for collecting composite samples, techniques for determining comprehensive feed quality assessment, and ways to account for silage and haylage stocks.

By applying modern scientific knowledge about the composition, properties, and quality indicators of silage and haylage, and analyzing cause-and-effect relationships in feed preparation and storage processes, the session implemented the principle of scientific rigor, which will be helpful for writing future research publications in this field.

The logical structure of the class was based on systematic and sequential learning: beginning with a review of basic feed knowledge, followed by the introduction of new concepts (quality, general and composite sample, assessment methods), gradually increasing the complexity of the material, and a clearly structured practical activity for students. This approach helps form a comprehensive understanding of the topic, develop professional competence, and enhance logical thinking skills.

By engaging students in feed quality calculations and in discussions of the results, the session fostered awareness and active participation. The chosen topic also promotes responsible handling of feed accounting and quality preparation, emphasizing the importance of proper feed supply for animal health and productivity.

The open class was conducted online.
