OPEN LECTURE “LEARNING ENGLISH WITHOUT BORDERS” AT SNAU

On June 3, 2025, an open lecture was held at the Department of Foreign Languages of Sumy National Agrarian University. The guest lecturer was Dr. John Goodyear, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Birmingham (UK). In his lecture, “Learning English without Borders: Designing Real-World Spaces,” Dr. John Goodyear addressed several important issues often faced by both those who teach foreign languages and those who learn them: creating favourable conditions and breaking down barriers in foreign language learning. The lecturer shared his experience in this area, as he is a practicing English teacher at the University of Birmingham. He demonstrated how archives can be used as an aid in creating a barrier-free multicultural environment for learning English. He also introduced the “soundwalk” technique, which can be used to overcome psychological and linguistic barriers. The lecturer also identified the main types of barriers that foreign language learners may encounter. The lecture was attended by teachers from the Department of Foreign Languages, as well as students from various university specialties.
We hope that such lectures will enhance and deepen the methodological skills of our teachers, providing them with the necessary tools for even better teaching of foreign languages at SNAU.
